Father Ambrose Eberz, O.S.B. Sunday, July 18, 1999

 The Rev. Ambrose G. Eberz, O.S.B., 86, a monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a lengthy illness.

Father Ambrose was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late George F. and Eleanora (Kaufman) Eberz.

He graduated from Saint Vincent Preparatory School in 1931 and attended Saint Vincent College and Seminary, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1940.

He entered the Benedictine Monastic Community of Saint Vincent Archabbey in 1933. He made simple profession of vows July 2, 1934, and solemn profession of vows July 11, 1937. He was ordained a priest in Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica by the late Hugh C. Boyle, Bishop of Pittsburgh, June 16, 1940.

Father Ambrose spent most of his years in the Archabbey's pastoral apostolates. He served in several parishes in the diocese of Greensburg, Pittsburgh, Altoona-Johnstown in Pennsylvania, and in the diocese of Covington, Ky., as well as in the archdioceses of Philadelphia and Chicago. He also was assistant chaplain at Barry Robinson Home, Norfolk, Va., and convent chaplain at Mount Saint Benedict Motherhouse, Erie.

Father Ambrose retired to Saint Vincent Archabbey in 1980. Since his retirement he had been in residence at the Archabbey and at the home of his sister, Eleanor Grundler, in North Side, Pittsburgh.

In addition to his sister, he is survived by two brothers, Anthony of Pittsburgh and Joseph of Bridgeville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Benedictine Health and Welfare Fund of Saint Vincent Archabbey.
