Lecture Series on Aging, Spirituality

Lecture Series on Aging, Spirituality Thursday, September 16, 2010

Saint Vincent College School of Social Sciences, Communication, and Education will sponsor a three-part lecture series entitled, Aging and Spirituality: Psychological and Biblical Perspectives, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 22, Oct. 20 and Nov. 10 at the Fred M. Rogers Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

The presenters will be Father Vernon A. Holtz, O.S.B., Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and clinical psychologist, and Brother Benedict Janecko, O.S.B., professor of Biblical studies.

“Everyone wants to live long but no one wants to get old,” said Father Vernon, who is also coordinating the programs. “The focus of the presentations will be on how we can better understand that our thoughts, emotions and attitudes are key determinants in the aging process and how the impact of spirituality plays a role. Life fails unless it is lived in terms of something beyond itself.”

The topics for each of the presentations include "Meaning of Adulthood, Aging, and Spirituality” on Sept. 22, "Personal Experiences of Aging: Regret, Loneliness, Intimacy” on Oct. 20 and "God: Ultimate Wisdom (Faith, Hope, and Love)” on Nov. 10.

"Anyone who is interested in exploring new ideas about how to find vibrant, new meaning in the human/spiritual process of aging will benefit from the series," Father Vernon said. Persons of all ages are welcome to attend and share in the discussion and questions.

Participants may park in Parking Area A and enter the Rogers Center at the first floor entrance.

Reservations are not required. For additional information, phone 724 805-2522.
