Artisans of the Monastery Show Nov. 1-15 at Saint Vincent Gristmill Wednesday, October 22, 2008

 Saint Vincent Gristmill Museum, Beatty Road, Unity Township, will host an exhibit, “Artisans of the Monastery,” November 1-15. The show will feature multimedia art by monks of Saint Vincent Archabbey.

An opening reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, November 1. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays during regular Gristmill General Store hours.

The exhibit will feature a variety of artwork including painting, stained glass, hand weaving, fabric art, sculpture, calligraphy, and bookbinding. Among those participating are Fr. Sebastian Samay, O.S.B, Fr. Philip Kanfush, O.S.B., Fr. Vincent de Paul Crosby, O.S.B., Fr. Thomas More Sikora, O.S.B., Br. Mark Floreanini, O.S.B., Br. Michael Antonacci, O.S.B., and Br. Albert Gahr, N.O.S.B.

Their pieces along with others by monks of Saint Vincent Monastery will be on display. Some items will be for sale.

Fr. Sebastian Samay is Master of Novices at the Archabbey. Born in Pécöl, Hungary, has served as Saint Vincent College faculty member and is an avid gardener.

Fr. Philip Kanfush, O.S.B., is Chief Financial Officer of the Archabbey and a member of the Education Department faculty. The author of two books, Renewed Each Morningand Emma’s Wetlands Adventure, he is from Center Township.

Father Vincent de Paul Crosby, O.S.B., specializes in the design and execution of vestments for the Liturgy. He is director of the Archabbey Studios, which serves as an outlet for the creative work of all the monks, since 1991.

Fr. Thomas More Sikora, O.S.B., of Avonmore, a weaver, is Director of Archabbey Artisans. Socius of Novices of the Archabbey, he is also an Assistant Director of the Gristmill and Gristmill General Store.

Br. Mark Floreanini, O.S.B., from Alliance, Ohio. earned a master of fine arts degree from the Savannah College of Arts and Designs, and was appointed to the Saint Vincent College faculty in 2005. He works in a variety of mediums, but primarily is known for his work in stained glass.

Br. Michael Antonacci, O.S.B., of Jeanette is Assistant Miller at the Saint Vincent Gristmill and a teaching assistant for the Saint Vincent College Physics Department and a 2007 graduate of Saint Vincent College.

Br. Albert Gahr, N.O.S.B., of Kersey, is a novice at Saint Vincent Archabbey. A graduate of Elk County Christian High School and Saint Vincent College, he also holds a doctorate in genetics and developmental biology from West Virginia University.
