**CURRENT ISSUE** Volume 20, Issue 1 Summer 2009
This 36-page color issue includes excerpts from the first part of the Wimmer 200 celebrations held in 2009. Abbot Primate Notker Wolf, O.S.B., visited from Rome for the opening ceremonies and talked about our founder Boniface Wimmer's "Passion for Christ." Dr. Jerome Oetgen gave the Threshhold lecture on Boniface Wimmer in Marc on the heritage of Boniface Wimmer. Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Monte Cassino Abbey, Rome, is included. Father Paul Taylor, O.S.B., receives a new appointment, and staff changes are announced as well. The abbey and parish members celebrated Easter Vigil in the Basilica, the groundbreaking for the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion, and the members of the monastic community had news of endeavors to report. Joseph Adams, O.S.B., was ordained to the priestood and Bonaventure Curtis, O.S.B., and David Ho, O.S.B., to the diaconate. The appointment of Father Edward Mazich, O.S.B., as novice master, was announced. Cardinal Justin Rigali will visit Saint Vincent in November for Founders' Day and the closing of the Wimmer celebration year.
Volume 19, Issue 2 Fall 2008
This 36-page color issue includes a feature on Boniface Wimmer: Letters of An American Abbot, a new book edited by Jerome Oetgen. Brother Benoit Allogia, O.S.B., and Brother Joseph Adams, O.S.B., were ordained to the diaconate. A minority scholarship fund was established in the name of Archabbot Douglas Nowicki, O.S.B. Father Stephen Cocordia, O.S.B., and Brother Fernando Lanas, O.S.B., joind the college faculty. The Fred Rogers Center held its grand opening and hosted the first annual Children's Literature Conference. The College marked its twenty-fifth anniversary of coeducation. Brother Bonaventure Curtis, O.S.B., and Father Peter Augustine Pierjok professed their solemn vows. Brother Michael Antonacci, O.S.B., Brother Gabriel Myriam Kurzawski, O.S.B., Brother Jeremiah Lange, O.S.B., and Brother Maximillian Maxwell, O.S.B. made first vows. Brother Nathaniel Polinski, O.S.B., and Brother Elijah Cirigliano, O.S.B., renewed their vows. Two-page features included highlights from the Brazil Mission trip and from Steeler training camp. Brother Pio Adamonis, N.O.S.B., Brother John Paul Heiser, N.O.S.B., Brother Isidore Minerd, N.O.S.B., Brother Albert Gahr, N.O.S.B., and Father Jean-Luc Zadroga, N.O.S.B. entered the novitiate. Members of the Benedictine Heritage Tour visited Rome. Father Philip M. Kanfush, O.S.B., was elected to the Saint Vincent College Board of Incorporators. Obituaries for Reverend Thomas Devereux, O.S.B., Brother Gerard Klaric, O.S.B., and Reverend Louis Sedlacko, O.S.B., are included in this issue.
Volume 19, Issue 1 Spring/Summer 2008
This 36-page color issue includes an article honoring the Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, who was the commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary Doctor of Divinity. Saint Vincent celebrated Saint Benedict Day. With the help of Brother Nathan Cochran, O.S.B., Saint Vincent College established a prize in its concert series in honor of Father Joseph P. Bronder, O.S.B. Father Myron M. Kirsch, O.S.B. was awarded the Boniface Wimmer Faculty Award. Maxwell King was appointed as executive director of the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media. Saint Vincent College paid tribute to William C. Ucker with the re-naming of Headmasters Hall and The William C. Ucker Center. The plan to build the Sis and Herman Dupre Science Complex was announced. Mike Tomlin was the commencement speaker. This issue included an 8-page spread featuring highlights from Pope Benedict XVI's apostolic journey to the United States. Saint Vincent hosted Sports Friendship Day. Brother Joseph Adams and Brother Benoit Alloggia were ordained to the diaconate. Brother Bonaventure Curtis and Brother Peter Augustine Pierjok professed solemn vows. Brother Michael Antonacci, Brother Jeremiah Lange, Brother Gabriel Myriam Kurzawski and Brother Maximillian Maxwell professed simple vows. Brother Michael Gabler, O.S.B., and Brother Mark Floreanini, O.S.B., won ribbons at the 54th Open Show of the Latrobe Art League. The digitization of the Archabbey's Glass Plate Collection was completed. The obituary for Reverend Simon Toth, O.S.B., is included in this issue.
Volume 18, Issue 2 Winter 2007-2008
This 28-page color issue features includes an article about the monastery artisans' exhibition, Artisans of the Monastery, at the Saint Vincent Gristmill Museum. Saint Vincent pays a tribute to Mother Teresa in a symposium marking the tenth anniversary of her death. The issue features a two-page spread highlighting moments from the mission to Brazil. Campus Ministry moves from Gerard Hall to Alcuin Hall. Photos are from the ordination of Shawn Matthew Anderson, O.S.B., to the priesthood. Brother Matthias Martinez, O.SB., and Brother Michael Miller, O.S.B., make solemn profession of monastic vows. Saint Vincent College football returns. The Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve opens. Martin J. Hagan gives the keynote speech at the annual Red Mass.
Volume 18, Issue 1 Summer 2007
This issue of Heart to Heart features many of the current projects on campus, such as the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve; the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing; and the Chuck Noll Field; as well as the visit of President George W. Bush. Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl received an honorary doctorate from Saint Vincent Seminary and Father Mark Wenzinger earned his doctorate. Father Philip Kanfush was appointed procurator of the Archabbey. The weavings of Father Thomas More Sikora and the stained glass of Brother Mark Floreanini were featured, along with new products at the Gristmill General Store, new DVDs from Father Jacques Daley, and an endowed chair to Honor Father Thomas Devereux. Two monks were ordained deacons, Brother Michael Gabler and Brother Matthias Martinez, and Shawn Matthew Anderson was ordained a priest. Brother Michael Miller and Brother Matthias made solemn vows. Work on the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media progressed, and The Way of the Cross was presented by Brother Elijah Cirigliano. Father Frank Ziemkiewicz was named headmaster of Benedictine Military School in Savannah, and the archabbey received four candidates for the novitiate.

Pope Benedict XVI and Saint Benedict are featured on the cover. A campus construction update is given. Father Vincent Crosby had a Fabric Art exhibit, and Father Paul Taylor was named Vice President of Institutional Advancement. The Saint Vincent Volunteer Fire Department is pictured and some reviews of writings of Father Demetrius Dumm provide high praise. A Benedictine study tour of China was planned and the Archabbey Basilica anniversary was featured on WQED's onQ. Father Frank Ziemkiewicz returned from a tour of duty as chaplain in Afghanistan and Iraq and a parish center was dedicated at Saint Andrew Parish in Chincoteague, Virginia. Professing simple vows were Brother Elijah Cirigliano and Brother Nathanael Polinski. The inauguration of Jim Towey as College President is pictured. Father Flavian Yelinko turned 100. Liz Cousins joined the public relations staff. New books by Archabbey Publications included Emma's Wetlands Adventure by Father Philip Kanfush, The Movement Towards Christian Unity in the Nineteenth Century with an introduction by Father Rene Kollar. The book was written by Christopher Dawson. Saint Vincent Seminary, from Its Origins to the Present, was written by Brother Bruno Heisey. Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp 2006 is pictured in a two-page spread. Father Paschal Morlino's work in Baltimore is featured.

Apostolic Nuncio Pietri Sambi received an honorary doctorate from Saint Vincent Seminary and Jim Towey was named President of Saint Vincent College. Shawn Matthew Anderson was ordained to the diaconate. The Gristmill was featured in Pennsylvania Magazine. Father Louis Sedlacko, Father Wilfred Dumm and Father Omer Kline were honored by the Saint Vincent Prep Alumni. Father Demetrius Dumm released So We Do Not Lose Heart, Biblical Wisdom for All Our Days. Groundbreaking was held for the Rogers Center and the McCarl Coverlet Collection. A mission trip to Brazil and a trip to help flood victims was featured. Brother Michael Gabler and Brother Fernando Lanas professed solemn vows. Archbishop Wilton Gregory was homilist at the Saint Benedict's Day Mass. The Legacy of Boniface Wimmer was traced as the first daughterhouse of Saint Vincent, St. John's Abbey, marked its sesquicentennial.

Pope Benedict XVI is featured on the cover of Heart to Heart. Inside, Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki presents the new Pope with a copy of the Basilica Anniversary Book. A new board of directors is installed at Benedictine Military School, and an exhibit at the Gallery honored the Basilica anniversary. Paul Whiteside was named to head the Development Office of the Archabbey and Seminary. Father Paschal Morlino attended the World Congress for Oblates in Rome; Father Thomas Devereux and Brother Nicholas Koss were named Alumni of Distinction by Saint Vincent College; Brother Bonaventure Curtis and Father Peter Augustine Pierjok made first profession of vows. The Gristmill coffeehouse opened. Brother Bruno Heisey, Brother Maurus Mount, Brother Benoit Alloggia and Brother Shawn Matthew Anderson made solemn profession of vows, and Jim Towey spoke at the annual Red Mass. Two pages of photos on Pittsburgh Steeler training camp at Saint Vincent were published. The centerfold included two pages of photos from the visit of Francis Cardinal Arinze to mark the Basilica's anniversary celebration. Retired Archabbot Paul Maher was featured in a book, two monks entered the novitiate. The long-lost compositions of Joseph Matthias Kracher were performed in a concert at the Abbey in the spring. Two groups from Saint Vincent attended World Youth Day, and the Saint Vincent Coloring Book was completed. Dr. Scott Hahn inaugurated a lecture series in honor of Pope Benedict. the Pope's biographer Dr. Heinz-Joachim Fischer was on campus, and Gothic Architecture and Scholasticism by Erwin Panofsky was reprinted.

This special issue of Heart to Heart is A Tribute to His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, a 36-page color tribute in words and photos. The issue, designed, edited and produced by Kim Metzgar, took third place in the 2006 Catholic Press Association Awards for Best Special Issue, Section or Supplement on the Papal Transition.
Volume 15, Issue 2 Winter 2005
An update on the Basilica Anniversary Book was given, with a photograph of the Blessed Virgin Mary statue in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception on the front cover. Father Sebastian Samay was named an Alumnus of Distinction by Saint Vincent College and two novices, Brother Bonaventure Curtis and Father Peter Augustine Pierjok, joined the community. A scholarship honoring Father Paschal Kneip was established, and Brother Mark Floreanini's stained glass work was featured. A scholarship was also named in honor of the late Bishop Nicholas Dattilo. Statues were installed at Saint Benedict Parish in Carrolltown, and a grant was received for that parish from the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. Father Philip Kanfush authored Renewed Each Morning, Reflections from the Rocking Chair, and the parish completed a cookbook. Brother Nicholas Koss reported on the Benedictine Commission on China and photos featured the beatification of Emperor Karl in Rome. Father Eugene Hemrick was the Founders' Day speaker, and abbey retreats were announced. Father Mark Gruber wrote a new book, Deep Calls Unto Deep. Father Philip Kanfush won a photo award, and the annual blessing ceremony was held at the Gristmill.
Volume 15, Issue 1 Summer 2004
Andre Watts paid tribute to Fred Rogers in an event to benefit the Fred M. Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media. Brother Norman Hipps was named Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing and Information Science, while Father Rene Kollar was named Dean of the School of Humanities and Fine Arts. William H. Isler, president of Family Communications, received the Presidential Medal of Honor at the spring Honors Convocation. Father Thomas Hart was named Assistant to the President for Mission and Brother Nathan Cochran coordinated the effort to beatify Emperor Karl. Father Germain Lieb was honored by Prep Alumni and a scholarship fund was started to honor Father Albert Bickerstaff. Jim Towey, White House Director of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, received an honorary degree from Saint Vincent Seminary, and the abbey retreat program established a web page. Father Sebastian Samay and Father Vernon Holtz were named to the Collebe Board of Directors. The Loe China Studies Center was established and the Fire Department began a cooperative effort with Lloydsville VFD. The Gristmill marked its 150th anniversary, and Boniface Hicks was ordained to the priesthood. Archabbey Publications released a book on the Wimmer Statue, and Saint Vincent welcomed the new Bishop of Greensburg, Lawrence E. Brandt.

The announcement of the Fred M. Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media is on the front page of this newsletter, along with Christmas greetings. Two novices were welcomed to the abbey, and the Archabbey Publications online store was established. Praying the Scriptures by Father Demetrius Dumm was recently released, and Father John Murtha was named an Alumnus of Distinction by Saint Vincent College. Savannah started an Oblate program and Superior Court Judge Maureen E. Lally-Green was keynote speaker at the annual Red Mass. Father Philip Kanfush was named to the Center High School Hall of Fame and Brother Benedict Janecko and Father Thomas Hart received Catholic Press Association Awards. The culinary skills of Father Ananias Buccicone were featured, as was the Campus Ministry program and a book by Father Wilfred Dumm. The Christmas ornament was the Lamb of God, and Father Cyprian Davis spoke at Founders' Day. The abbot's annual Brazil trip was noted in photos, as was the Abbey's mission in Taiwan. Restoration work on the Wimmer Statue was begun.

This issue of Heart to Heart remembers the late Fred Rogers and his relationship with Saint Vincent Archabbey and Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B. Father Lee R. Yoakam, O.S.B., is a military chaplain, called up again after a stint in Afghanistan in 2002. Father Mark Gruber's latest book is Sacrifice in the Desert. Jubilarians for 2003 are featured, as are the ordinations of Brian Boosel, O.S.B., Thomas Curry, O.S.B., and Cajetan Homick, O.S.B., to the priesthood. The Gristmill's video received an award, and an article features Br. Bruno Heisey, O.S.B., who went from a job at the Cumberland County Courthouse to the life of a Benedictine monk. The Saint Vincent Fire Department marked an anniversary, as did the Summerhill parish of St. John. Other events around the archabbey are also recounted in this issue, just released in the summer of 2003.

Coverage of the International Young Audlt Forum graces the cover of this issue, along with the announcement of the new Loe China Studies Center at Saint Vincent. Inside this issue is archabbey news and a Christmas message from Archabbot Douglas, appointments, novices, the diaconate ordinations, Jubilarian Day, articles on the Benedictine sisters, first pastorates and Saint Benedict Hall, the new dorm at Saint Vincent College. Father Gilbert Burke, O.S.B., was named an alumnus of distinction, there are photos of the archabbot's visits to Saint Vincent Archabbey missions in Asia and Brazil, and Father Demetrius Dumm's book, Cherish Christ Above All, has been reprinted. Father Mark Gruber has a new book, Journey Back to Eden, and Father Jacques Daley has a new set of videos on the rosary. The new Archabbey Publications catalogue is available. A feature was done on the fire department, and Saint Vincent honored Cardinal Adam Maida at the Seminary's Alumni Day in the Fall.
Volume 13, Issues 1-2 Winter/Spring 2002
The International Young Adult Forum is coming to the Saint Vincent Campus July 18-22, with His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze returning. Two Benedictines studying in Rome are pictured receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday from Pope John Paul II. Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki's visit to Asia is recounted, as is the news of various monks from around the Archabbey. The Saint Vincent history book, Mission to America, was reviewed in the Western Pennsylvania History magazine, while a new cookbook from the Basilica Parish was released. Father Flavian Yelinko became the longest-lived monk in the history of Saint Vincent. Gristmill products were reviewed, and an important centennial at Savannah, Georgia, where Saint Vincent Benedictines currently minister, was reviewed. The 2002 retreat schedule was published, the eight Benedictines celebrating jubilees this year were pictured, as were the three men scheduled to be ordained to the diaconate on July 12. The latest round of Benedictines from all over the world who are studying at Saint Vincent Seminary are pictured, and the passing of three confreres noted. Cardinal Paul Shan of Fu Jen Catholic University received an honorary doctorate from Saint Vincent Seminary and some photos from Father Fred Byrne's spring break in Haiti are shown. This newsletter is 24 pages long.
Volume 12, Issues 2-3 Spring/Summer 2001
This 32-page newsletter is full of almost 100 color photos, thus will take some time to download. Lech Walesa, former president of Poland, and (now) former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge, as well as Latrobe native and golfing legend Arnold Palmer are on the cover of the latest issue. The governer was in Latrobe to announce funding for the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve adjacent to the Saint Vincent campus. Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki serves on the board of the reserve. Archabbot Douglas also introduced Lech Walesa as he spoke to a large crowd in Greensburg. There is lots of news from the monks around the archabbey, a story on the opening of the Gristmill General Store, ordinations, professions, a visit to the Archabbey's mission in Brazil, and a visit by Francis Cardinal George, who received an honorary doctorate from Saint Vincent Seminary. The Archabbey welcomed seven new novices, and a group of visitors from Missouri, as well as visitors from Europe and China. New archabbey appointments were announced.

Heart to Heart grows to its largest issue yet, at 24 pages of full color (so be warned the download may take some time.) The announcement of the forthcoming visit of Francis Cardinal George to Saint Vincent, an inaugration photo from Founders' Day, Br. Edward Mazich and Pope John Paul II, Winnie Palmer and the latest book by Fr. Rene Kollar are on the front page. Inside there is lots of news from around the archabbey, an article on the Saint Vincent Gristmill and its place on the cover of Westsylvania Magazine, announcement of the Seminary Capital Campaign, and lots of history. The Benedictine Sisters marked their 70th anniversary in the United States and their affiliation with Saint Vincent is noted. The Fire Department was featured in some national ads and Fr. Damian Abbaticchio's family tie to a professional baseball pioneer is detailed. The summer retreat schedule is listed, sixteen Benedictines will mark jubilees in 2001, and a national columnist wrote about Saint Vincent in a recent column. Appointments are announced at Saint Vincent Library, Saint Vincent Seminary and at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, where Br. Nicholas Koss, O.S.B., serves. A Mass by Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., marked the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Art Rooney, Sr., a longtime friend of Saint Vincent. Renovations at the Gristmill were noted and upcoming events, including two ordinations this spring and summer, were announced. And last, but not least, Vice President Dick Cheney is pictured in a campaign stop at Saint Vincent.

Heart to Heart features the profession of vows from the summer, including three Benedictines professing solemn vows, Br. David Ho, O.S.B., Br. Joseph M. Adams, O.S.B., and Br. Thomas P. Curry, O.S.B. The naming of new Saint Vincent College President James F. Will is featured on the cover, and Mister Fred Rogers and his wife are also pictured, both of whom were honored at the Saint Vincent College commencement in May. The ordination of Philip M. Kanfush, O.S.B., and Matthew T. Laffey, O.S.B., to the priesthood is covered. There is a two-page story and photo spread on the visit of Francis Cardinal Arinze to Saint Vincent in April of 2000. The appointment of a new subprior, Br. Anthony Kirsch, O.S.B., is announced, as well as an honor to Prior Father Earl Henry, O.S.B., and appointment of Father Justin M. Restoration work on the historic Saint Vincent Gristmill was detailed in the cover story. Inside, an Easter reflection by Father Demetrius R. Dumm, O.S.B., was featured, as well as mention of the newly-opened Basilica Gift Shop. A trip to China by Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., was described in photos and text, as was a trip to Taiwan by Father Demetrius.
