 Members of the Saint Vincent Archabbey, College, and Seminary and Parish communities are preparing to close the yearlong celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Founder Boniface Wimmer with a solemn Mass celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali on Thursday, November 19. 2010 Retreat Dates Announced

 Brother Hugh Lester, O.S.B., Archabbey Retreat Director, has announced the 2010 retreat schedule. Father Nathan Munsch, O.S.B., will direct the retreat for married couples, scheduled for May 21-23. Father Edward Mazich, O.S.B., will conduct the retreat on Benedictine spirituality, scheduled for May 28-30. The silent retreat, from June 4-6, will be directed by Father Boniface Hicks, O.S.B. Father John Mary Tompkins, O.S.B., will conduct the charismatic prayer retreat from June 25-27. The men’s retreat, July 22-25, will be given by Brother Elliott Maloney, O.S.B.  Father Jeremy Driscoll, O.S.B, author and professor, will speak at the annual lecture for the Saint Benedict Education Foundation to be held on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fred M. Rogers Center. Driscoll is a priest and monk of Mount Angel Abbey in St. Benedict, Ore., and is a professor of theology at Mount Angel Seminary and at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant’ Anselmo in Rome. Gristmill Exhibit on Old Photos to Open Feb. 26 Monday, February 16, 2009
 The Saint Vincent Gristmill, Beatty Road, Unity Township, will host an exhibit of old photographs from around the area from Feb. 26 to March 12. The exhibit, which opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, will feature photographs from the recently released book Saint Vincent Past to Present: A Visual Journey. The book includes 100 restored images from the Saint Vincent Archabbey glass plate negative collection, which was recently catalogued and digitized. Regular museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays. Read More

Anniversaries have a way of nurturing nostalgia, but they are far more important as reminders of an original vision that can be a guide for the future. And when the monks of Saint Vincent reflect on the history and future of their institution, they must come to terms with the impressive figure of Boniface Wimmer. He did more than found Saint Vincent; he gave it a direction and a momentum that we still feel today. No one would deny his achievements as a founder and a missionary, but there are still misgivings by some about the direction that Wimmer gave to monasticism at Saint Vincent and indeed to the entire congregation of abbeys and priories that derives from his foundation. This would seem to be a good time to examine this crucial issue. Read More

 Saint Vincent Archabbey Archivist Father Brian Boosel, O.S.B., was an assistant in the archives several years ago when he asked what could be done to help preserve boxes and boxes of glass plate negatives which were in the archives. The negatives date from the latter part of the 19th century through the early 20th century. The collection, consisting of more than 600 images, ranges from portraits of monks to prep school and college athletes to buildings and architecture around campus and photos in the local community.
